Sabarimala is located inside the dense low altitude evergreen forests of Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Kerala, which is also one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries in India. It is home not only to Tigers but also to many endangered and threatened species of flora and fauna.
Clean Sabarimala campaign is aimed at creating awareness among devotees about the dangers of plastic usage in Sabarimala. Through this campaign, we encourage devotees to be part of this initiative by spreading awareness or when they visit Sabarimala next time, not to carry plastics.
The plastic deposit by devotees has impacted the precious patch of Sabarimala forests. Plastic waste devotees leave behind in the forest, such as PET water bottles to plastic covers, pooja items in plastic packets/containers, food packets, wrappers, etc. become a potential threat to forest and wild animals.
It’s estimated that over 100 million devotees trek to Sabarimala every year. Imagine the small quantity of plastics deposited would amount to be tonnes and practical difficulties for authorities in clearing the waste in hill terrain place Sabarimala.
